Hundreds of popular cars ‘at risk of keyless theft’

    29/01/19

Hundreds of popular cars - including four of the five best-selling models in the UK - are susceptible to "keyless theft", new research claims.

Consumer group Which? found the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Qashqai and Ford Focus were all at risk.

Thieves are increasingly thought to be using technology to bypass entry systems on keyless cars.

But industry body the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) said "new cars are more secure than ever".

Which? analysed data on keyless - or "relay" - attacks from the General German Automobile Club (ADAC), a roadside recovery organisation.

ADAC tested 237 keyless cars and found that all but three were susceptible.

The latest models of the Discovery and Range Rover, and the 2018 Jaguar i-Pace, all made by Jaguar Land Rover, were found to be secure.

Of the top-selling cars in the UK, only the Vauxhall Corsa was deemed safe because it is not available with keyless entry and ignition.

"Thieves have been using keyless theft for several years, but manufacturers continue to make new models that can be stolen in this way, meaning there is an ever-larger pool of vehicles for thieves to target," Which? said in a statement.

Cars are increasingly sold with keyless entry and ignition systems

Harry Rose, editor of Which? Magazine, said manufacturers needed "to up their game".

A growing number of new cars are made with keyless entry systems, allowing owners to open them with the brush of a hand, as long as their actual key is nearby - for instance in their pocket.

However, thieves can fool these systems with special devices, allowing them to enter the vehicle and drive away.

Car theft is much lower than it was in the 1990s but has been rising, with keyless technology thought to be partly to blame.

In the year to March 2018, more than 106,000 offences of theft of or unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle were reported to police in England and Wales - the highest annual total since 2009.

Mike Hawes, head of the SMMT, said: "Industry takes vehicle crime extremely seriously and any claims otherwise are categorically untrue.

"New cars are more secure than ever, and the latest technology has helped bring down theft dramatically with, on average, less than 0.3% of the cars on our roads stolen.

"Criminals will always look for new ways to steal cars; it's an ongoing battle and why manufacturers continue to invest billions in ever more sophisticated security features - ahead of any regulation.

"However, technology can only do so much and we continue to call for action to stop the open sale of equipment with no legal purpose that helps criminals steal cars."

Keyless cars causing dozens of deaths

    15/05/18

Many cars are now being made with keyless ignitions

Dozens of people have been poisoned by carbon monoxide after failing to turn off the ignition on keyless cars, according to the New York Times.

Its report found that 28 people had died and 45 others had suffered injuries since 2006.

More than half of the 17 million vehicles sold annually in the US now have keyless ignitions.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) said it had published safety recommendations in 2011.

"Our standards are voluntary. It is up to the manufacturers to use them where required," said director of SAE Jack Pokrzywa.

It is difficult to put numbers on the exact number of deaths related to carbon monoxide from keyless ignitions left running as no central agency records them.

The New York Times arrived at its number from news reports, lawsuits, and police and fire records tracked by advocacy groups.

Keyless ignition systems - widely used in cars around the world - consist of a device that is carried by the driver, allowing them to start the car with the press of a button linked to the fob.

The car will not start if the key fob is not detected but once the car has been started it continues to run even if the device is removed from the vehicle.

    Customer safety

In some hybrid car models, the engine may not be running when the driver gets out of the car but could come on later when batteries run low.

The recorded deaths had been caused by drivers leaving their vehicles running in enclosed garages which allowed carbon monoxide gas to get into their homes, according to the New York Times.

Some carmakers have voluntarily included warnings for drivers:

    • Ford introduced a feature in 2013 that automatically turns the engine off after 30 minutes of idling, if the key fob is not in the vehicle

    • Toyota has a system of three audible signals outside the car and one inside to alert drivers that the motor is still running

A spokesman for Toyota told the BBC: "Customer safety is always our priority and Toyota's Smart Key System has and continues to meet or exceed all relevant safety standards."

In 2015 a group lawsuit was filed in the US against 10 of the world's biggest carmakers on the issue, which described the technology as "deadly". The case was dismissed by a judge, the following year.

Driver baffled by keyless BMW steering wheel theft

    05/06/18

Paul Fielder said police officers told him that steering wheel thefts were "occurring quite frequently"

A man is calling on manufacturers to improve security after the steering wheel of his car was stolen from his locked vehicle.

Paul Fielder, from Hull in East Yorkshire, discovered the theft from his £45,000 BMW X3 when he left his house to go to work.

The car parked on his drive had been broken into, despite the keys being inside the house.

RAC Insurance said it was aware of a "spate" of similar thefts.

Mr Fielder said when he reported the crime at his local police station officers said the type of theft was "occurring quite frequently".

"I couldn't get my head around it," said Mr Fielder.

"Because there was no window smashed, there was no marks on the car and the car was looking fine.

"So I couldn't work out how somebody had broken into the car."

Simon Williams from the RAC said criminals sometimes used technology to steal the data on key fobs through the wall of the owner's house.

"Often these steering wheels are being sold for around £1,500," he said.

"But the damage to the motorist's vehicle is obviously far greater and the cost of putting it right can go into the thousands and obviously will have a lasting effect on the person's insurance going forwards."

Mr Fielder said car manufacturers needed to improve security measures.

"I think industry wide there's a problem, they need to recognise it. Clearly there's a problem when if your keys are inside your house it's not safe," he said.

The BBC has contacted BMW for a comment.
