Deadspace series are pretty good. Most games from Monolith, while being closer to standard FPS should also qualify, in my opinion. That being said, horror themes (not limited to games) don’t have the desired effect on me, for some reason. The single moment when I was jumpscared in Fear was some random rat encounter in a tunnel. Creepy little girls, ghosts and things like that are not scary to me. However, there are many games with very disturbing, but not necessarily scary elements. Reanimation of slain god’s avatar into undead abomination and his following, extremely blasphemous speech in Disciples 2 is one example. But the most disturbing stuff I’ve seen was in Grim Dawn, which is a postapocalyptic fantasy Diablo clone (some of the Diablo content would also easily qualify here. Extradimensional beings invade human world and are using their technology to amalgamate humans and other creatures into war machines like in Half Life, but this is thousands times more gruesome. In one quest in particular, they were rounding up young women and turned them into living wombs for breeding their hosts, mutilated them beyond recognition and merged them with their technology (in a facility made out of organic matter from captured humans, some of whom were still alive, if this was not enough). Pretty gruesome sight indeed and I’m not easily disturbed.

Love Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Clocktower series.

Haven’t played games in a long while. I was recently playing We Happy Few, but not sure if this considered horror.

I've only ever read one novel that actually frightened me: Straub's Ghost Story

This is a fantastic game I used to play on my PSP:

It's a point and click game, you have to hide from your enemies, no such a things as killing the bad guys, that makes it even more frightening than other Survival Horror games where you can kill your enemies and continue the exploration in peace.

    Amnesia: Dark descent.

That game was a groundbreaker. Until that point, most horror games were scary because of bad/difficult controls or jumpscares. This game, though, it had no jumpscares. No combat whatsoever.

It had atmosphere. It had you too scared to go into the next room, hiding in a cubboard just to catch your breath. It had you running from monsters you did not even see, and had you fear and love the darkness.

The Fatal Frame series is also fantastic, much more scarier than Resident or Silent Hill, in my opinion.
The ghosts of this game appear all of a sudden, you never know when you're gonna bump with another one, plus the fact that these games takes place in majority dark areas, traditional Japanese houses makes things a lot more scarier.

I’ll have to check Fatal Frame out. RE and SH series were my childhood, and it was always fun to play these as a family.

Sweet Home, released for the NES in 1989, is an interesting Survival Horror game with elements of RPG, some of it's gameplay elements are also present in the first Resident Evil: the mansion, the animations (loadings) of the doors being opened animation, limited inventory...
There is also a movie that was released at the same time as the game.
