Possibly he is very intelligent, but if he was experiencing a psychosis then that can also impact upon him feelings of disconection to himself and the world.

He had/has a genre of OCD called Purely Obsessional OCD or "Pure O"..

If classic OCD (as depicted in media) has a person compulsively washing their hands, for instance.. Pure O might have a person spending 12 hours a day in rumination.. In my friend's case, his rumination centred around that theme I described earlier..

Up until the last time our paths crossed - we have lost touch - he had never experienced psychosis.

Yep , obsessive thinking , I knew a guy like that , he was obsessed with talking about martial arts , i mean he was clinically obsessive and he would ask the same question or express the same thoughts continuosly over and over again , the repetitive thought process and obsession is a manifestation of the illness.

If "Classic OCD" is literal gymnastics (symptomology manifesting in physical actions, e.g. compulsive/repetitive hand washing).. then Pure OCD is cognitive gymnastics..

This friend I reference is (he's still alive) possessed of an intelligence that is first tier, upper stratosphere.. and so his cognitive gymnastics was/is Olympic level..

Just because he was/is mentally ill, I personally wouldn't undervalue or understate the intellectual meaningfulness of his obsessions..

It might be said that he was "over thinking it" in the extreme.. even so, present within the gratuitousness, were particulars/instances of value, IMO.

More likely that we're living in an elaborate computer simulation. Like we're all characters in an alien Sims type game.

Impossible, if it would be real, in real world we would be like 1000x more inteligent as we are now.

That was a long non-answer answer. We wouldn't know it's a simulation any more than video game characters know they're in a simulation. There's been scientific experiments on this that showed atoms and molecules that make up the universe around us act differently when we observe them and some other things suggesting it's an artificial universe made up of computer code. It's been a while since I saw the video but I'll try to find it.
