Northumbria could have been so much greater and stronger if not for the Viking raids that destabilised the area. Northumbria was one of the most influential areas of Celtic Christianity and has had a Catholic tradition as well. So I'm not slating Northumbria. However, it was an area that was quite a grey one between Scotland and England, and even in terms of language the distinctions haven't been all that clear. Many from the area recognise they have more similarities with Scots than with English. Northumbrians aren't really English at all.

In response to Treffie, Yorkshire and Lancashire are very similar, as well as in accents too. I sometimes have trouble differentiating the two...

WE...eeeeeeelllll.... You could say that for a comparison between upland Blackburnshire and the Moors of the West Riding... And for Salfordshire and the Don basin... There are dialect similarities. Mercian influence...

But more easterly parts are very different. And I CAN even feel it just as you climb onto the plateau, somehow.

I doubt you on the Trønder component, I don't think it's as prevalent as you are attempting to claim. I think Borreby, and Halstätt was a stronger component.

What you say in general here fits the description.

So in other words they are just Germanic Brits.

I could say some of this Danish/Northern German type fit easily into Scandinavia, The Lower Countries and parts of Northern France (Normandy, the Channel Islands, Picardy and Alsace).

    Thread revival!

I wonder how much of the Norse input in Yorkshire and the northeast of England in general is Norse-Gael in addition to direct Norse-from-Scandinavia.

Uhtred (the Saxon, not the TA user) was claimed to be descent from Crinan of Dunkeld, which in turn would make him belonging to a Scottish sept of the Ui Neil. We like to think of the Saxons of northern England as being pure "Germans", but well...elites like to mix with other elites.
