Northumbria could have been so much greater and stronger if not for the Viking raids that destabilised the area. Northumbria was one of the most influential areas of Celtic Christianity and has had a Catholic tradition as well. So I'm not slating Northumbria. However, it was an area that was quite a grey one between Scotland and England, and even in terms of language the distinctions haven't been all that clear. Many from the area recognise they have more similarities with Scots than with English. Northumbrians aren't really English at all.
