I think a problem with asian countries in general, is that they love to FOLLOW.
Independent thought is not in their culture.
Historically their working class has been exploited like crazy. Even look at it today they have an insane amount of workhours per week. But if you ask them about it, they almost dare not to say that they think it should be reduced.
You can't take away though how well the Japanese society works. But this again is due to their amazing ability i would almost say to not question or oppose the system, they just follow. And they are good at that.
I also think that their ethnic homogeneity has been a big strength for them, they trust each other.
They made the right decision not to import millions of culturally and ethnically different people like europe has done, which was a naive and idiotic desicion that we are yet to experience the full effect of.
