In Europe the darkest are gypsies, and those who live on the mediterranean except northern Adriatic, Croatia and Montenegro.
Italians, Spaniards, Portuguese, Greeks, Malteses and Cypriots are the darkests, with naturally the gypsies.

I've haven't been to Southwestern France so I can't compare.

But I've only been to the Southeast part (only to Marseille, Nice and Corscia), I found them to be similar mostly to Northern Italians and some Central Italians (Tuscans).

I was only going by all the places of Europe I been to so far and I know that Southeastern France aren't completely the darkest but still darker compared to most other parts of France.

That's what I expected : Marseilles and Nice are too mixed cities to be reprentative of Provence. Full of non-natives coming from everywhere.

I have seen plenty of native Provencals and to me they look like other more French groups .

I don't doubt all of what you are saying so yes people do come from everywhere in the Provence.

On average they will obviously look closer to other French but at the same time I should of cleared it up a bit I have seen some that look quite similar to some Northern Italians (like Ligurians or Piedmontese mostly).

People from southern france can be rather dark, I think. Ithaca was a thread on southern france a while ago and it showed quite a few "swarthy" people

French has been a multiethnic country well before being multiracial. The two ethnic groups that can lay claim of being truly French (descendants of Oc and Oil speakers before the Revolution) used to make 90% of inhabitants during Revolution, a rate on a steady decrease eversince. Today, it is a mere 60%, according to an INSEE study. Now what does this mean: wherever you go in France, it is impossible to make a racial judgment since most of the people in large cities which you are more likely to visit are of non-French origins.

Here is my impression on people I've seen who, at very least, have French surnames. Brunets predominate (according to Romanian standards, most would be "blonds"), but most of these brunets are born blond or blondish. Overall, the French are more Northern rather than Southern European. Blonds, especially among children and teens seem to me prevalent in Northern France and a strong minority in Southern France. Overall, French are much lighter than even the lightest Italians (Piedmontese, Venetans) and certainly closer to Germans in looks. French regions in Italy (Aoste, Piedmontese foothills) are, based on the map of Biasutti, as light as South Tirol and we must remember these are Southern French. In France, regular guys look like this:

^ Oil surname, pure French origins at least in three generations.
