    There's actually an entire journal article that explains why Mediterraneans build and design their cities the way they do. Actually she brings up a good point about how ineffective architecture adopted from the West is in these countries.

    A lot of buildings are made out of material that is available in the area. Most Mediterranean areas do not seem to have heavy forested areas so I assume wood for buildings is not available so they are built out of other materials. In USA just about all structures are built from wood and use a wood frame base.
