I think Gucci knew full well what they were doing. The bigger the uproar, the more interest in the brand. They're making thousands of sales right now because people are flocking to the Gucci site to see this "offensive" piece of clothing and buying other shit whilst they're there.
No such thing as bad publicity.

That sweater was never meant to be pretty. It was made to stir up controversy and it did that very well. Despite, and thanks to, all the "outrage", the Gucci brand is doing financially better than every before. AND those sweaters have become collectors' items too.

We are living in a plastic culture of fake, manufactured outrage. That said, I don't agree with spending thousands on clothing, but Versace is the best Italian label. Medusa heads and mosaics FTW.
