Felipe II and his family at the Mausoleum of San Lorenzo del Escorial. I saw it in loco and I was impressed by the detail. Work if the Italian sculptor Pompeo Leoni.

Default Monumento a España (Buenos Aires)

Ponce De Leon, St. Agustine, Florida, USA.

One of the reasons I like this statue so much is because he looks rather foppish and cavalier, as one would expect from someone who trampled about in the swamps of Florida searching for the fountain of youth, especially since he was of gentle birth. (Apparently, that is a myth, but it is a fun one.)

Besides that, he also was the first European to set foot on Florida, and named the state. He was also the first governor of Puerto Rico. He died in Havana, Cuba, after being thrust by a poisonous arrow in a failed attempt to colonize Florida.

I remember seeing this monument in a special of some kind, I think it was some British show about moving abroad, and thinking it was one of the most amazing things I'd ever seen. It's a work of art.

That was constructed to be part of the 1940 Expostition called "Mundo Português", to celebrate the 800 years of the foundation of the Portuguese nation. The quarter of Belém in Lisbon was completely rebuilt and acquired the monumental character that it maintains still today...altough unfortunately some of the original buildings were demolished.
