Well Brits and Scandos are masters of melancholic music. Brits do it better of course, with more style. It's more uplifting and classic, more flowy, less naive. However, Portuguese do have sad elements in their music as well, they just go for more rhytmic and uplifting stuff. South Asians and East Asians tend to make "cute music" which fits their nature well. It can be very serious and majestic too, sensitive things can do that. Yiruma for instance. Middle Eaterners and Africans however like more happier and euphoric things. The Middle Eastern melancholy tends to be some kind of dramatic and dissociative pain. It's not really sad, just painful and mysterious at the same time. Just like the whole Middle East.

Agree on Italians. They have all things in their music. Mediterranean and Northern feels etc. Balkan folk is very gorgeous as well with it's thick and buzzy brass section. What i have notices as well, is what Balts are quite melancholic and Russian slavs not that much, surprisingly. This is just my theory however.

Sounds like some ripoff of Romanian electronic sound. Edward Maya etc. Russians and Turks seem to be good at stealing everything. That being said Russia is full of wonderful composers and classically trained pianists and Turks can be good musicians as well.

My favorite sensibility (re: melancholy) is the Italian one.

In terms of literature, however, my favorite sensibility (re: melancholy) is the French one.
