I've read they didn't let the Chinese build a large fiber optic internet network because of security concerns (I think Huawei was behind the project).

Relying to much in China could be very dangerous, but it would also be harmful to cut the special ties between both countries when China accounts for 30% of the Australian trade. It's surely a tough and premedited decision.

China is already using its economic power to bully its smaller trading partners who don't kowtow.

Good for them! The Chinese are among the most ruthless colonizers in the world. Just because they don't land on the shore and plant their flag on it, claiming it for God and Country, people don't realize that that they're actually colonists and economic imperialists. (not saying that the US is perfect).
