Were you beaten as kids?

Just epic verbal fights with my mom, mostly through adolescence. Physically I can't recall anything intense, I used to get the occasional slap on the butt if I wasn't listening to them
My dad had the ability to bring sense to us just by sitting us down and have a mature discussion. My mom used to be more short tempered.

Yes, I was beaten till 13 years old. Especially when I was 4-8 years, my dad beat me almost everyday after he return home from workplace

When I was very little and I was naughty, my grandma would spank me on the bottom with a wooden spoon.

My mom was always a very emotional person and prone to outbursts because of things happening in her life, and if you happen to cross her path (even innocently) when she is like this then it doesn't matter who is in the way.

I'll never forget a specific day when she was like this. I was looking for my dress in my cupboard and it wasn't there. Then I went to her cupboard and in a laundry mix-up it landed there. She was already in one of 'those' moods. I should have seen it coming because I was in my early 20's already but I didn't. In retrospect I should have gotten out there as fast as possible but things escalated really fast and I ended up beaten by a coat hanger and called a 'whore'. I tried to get her off me but she threw me onto the bed and pinned my arms down with her legs and began to strangle me. When I eventually blacked out she thought she'd killed me and went straight into a fit of crying hysterics, regretting how she had killed her daughter.

On another day when she was in one of her moods, she picked a fight with my 75 year-old grandmother. Grandmother was slapped, beaten to the ground and had a kitchen chair broken over her back. Fortunately there were no serious injuries, only bruises, but it could have turned out much worse.

My mom was difficult to live with sometimes because she could change in an instant. She was very unpredictable. If things in her life were going smoothly she was the most awesome mother. But if things were bad she lashed out at whoever was the closest person. She has very bad coping mechanisms and externalises her emotions - so whoever happens to be standing there is fully responsible for how her life went wrong in 1974.

All that aside, I love my mother dearly. I just don't want to live with her because she is a rollercoaster.

You should take BJJ classes so you can choke her out whenever she lashes out. If she gets choked out enough times, she'll learn to stop acting crazy.

I don't think a 'one size fits all mentality' works for everyone. From what I noticed growing up some kids need a smack and that is enough and other kids simply need to be spoken to and that is enough. Other kids need something they enjoy taken away from them for a period of time. I think the last works with most kids.

My mother hit me. My father did not. Guess who I was more likely to listen to? My father. I was more afraid of what my father would say than my mother hitting me (and she hit hard) because I respected him more. Even as a kid I couldn't respect someone who hysterically flips out.

So for example "don't touch the hot drink because you will get hurt" instead of "how many times have I told you not to touch that", kids have a natural desire to test boundaries and be curious so an explanation is more effective. Or for example if they are throwing things across the room, direct them to throw a ball out in the field, "we don't throw things but do this instead".

Reminds me of when I was two years old when I kept trying to touch boiling water in a pot despite my mom telling me not to; eventually she said "Go ahead, see what happens," and I did, and well...I never did that again.
