More than 350 cases or suspected cases have been registered, with several of those affected in critical condition. One patient is in a coma. EHEC can lead to kidney failure which can be fatal, as well as severe anaemia.

Ten people dead so far in Germany alone. I read somewhere that it was found in a batch of Spanish cucumbers so something most have gone wrong. According to the Dutch newspaper Trouw it's spreading like wildfire:

In Frankrijk werden zaterdagavond drie verdachte gevallen gemeld van voedselvergiftiging, 'gelinkt aan een epidemie in Duitsland'. Frankrijk liet ook een lot komkommers uit de winkelrekken halen.

Als het in Frankrijk inderdaad om de EHEC-bacterie gaat, dan is die ondertussen in acht landen aangetroffen. In Zwitserland werd tijdens het weekend een tweede geval van EHEC-besmetting bevestigd. Verder zijn er 25 besmettingen bevestigd in Zweden, 7 in Denemarken, 3 in Groot-Brittannië, 2 in Oostenrijk en 1 in Nederland.
Volgens de Duitse autoriteiten komen de besmette komkommers uit Spanje. Daar is er nog geen EHEC-infectie vastgesteld.

It's of course from the German authorities but if it.. and it might well be: there is no need to be "ouch - they just hate on us".. no tough shit happens. Those who effed up will be prosecuted and be forced to pay compensation.

Germany has been having quite a few food scares recently. A while back it was the eggs that were toxic, contaminated via some industrial waste chemicals.

Exactly. And whoever messed up deserves to a severe punishment from the courts. Such mistakes should not happen.

I'm not afraid of ehec. As always the hysteric media exaggerates.

Of course I find food scandals disgusting and the people responsible for those have to be charged, but because of industrial food production such things unfortunately happen from time to time.

Afaik there is no evidence yet, that Spanish vegetables are responsible.

Once again, the solution is to buy regional instead of international. It costs a bit more, granted, but it's worth the prize. My meat and vegetables are from local Northern German farmers.
