Which brings me to a basic and crucial question: are the main divisions politically (you might call them 'Left-Right' or something else) mostly economic or social and cultural? And if it is the latter, then to what extent could the various Communist dictatorships actually be described as 'leftist' or 'progressive'?

I think there are many possibilities: culturally conservative and economically liberal (like general Anglo-American Right and their puppets in Latin America, think in the likes of Pinochet and Bolsonaro), culturally and politically anti-liberal (fascists, third-positionists, integralists and, believe it or not, some kinds of socialism like Arab socialism, Castrism, stalinism etc.), culturally liberal and economically anti-liberal (average leftists) and culturally and economically liberal (the so called ''Libertarians'').

As someone with sympathies for the Third-Position I'd consider a hardcore Socialist like Castro more an ally than someone like Reagan or Thatcher even if I'm culturally kinda conservative.

They had British Union of Fascists, Nordic League, and the Right Club. The British-German friendship thing was popular with some elites/financiers.

Finns have always known that morally wrong side won.

If we speculate about Nazis victory...then more interesting would be hear how long you think they would have stayed in power? Hardly forever. 1000years? Very unlikely. 70years (still today)? Nothing is forever and Nazis possible victory should not be seen like that.
