I think linguists have confirned pictish is close to celtic languages, they may be pre-celtic but indo european though. Scottish highlanders also don't really have any higher neolithic DNA, or darker hair/eyes than other Brits, so its unlikely. Furhtermore climate change hit the neolithics hard which is part of the reason they died off, would have been even more formidable in scotland

Then why do we still find I2a in Western Europe? PIE mixed with hunters and farmers in Central Europe.

These ones were more like Basques because they had more of WHG admixture than farmers in Southern Europe.

This sample is good proof that Europeans before the Indo invasions built boats/ships. IE never needed boats on the steppe, only horses.

Pictish were bilingual, the inscriptions found in Scotland are in two different languages, one not IE and the other Celtic. The first was probably their ancestral language, and the second was a language that they acquired to communicate with their Celtic neighbours, during time the ancestral language was replaced by Celtic. But in origin they were definetly not IE.

It's impossible that the Picts weren't IE people, like other Brits. It would also be extremely unlikely that they spoke a pre-IE language. A pre-Celtic language is possible.

Why?

If Basque language survived until today surrounded by Romance speaking peoples, why it's not possible that another pre-IE language survived until IXth century in a remote corner of Europe like Scotland? Which also never was under Roman rule and never had a Latinization process.

Nevertheless the Pictish iscriptions present in Scotland are in two different languages. One Celtic and the other not IE.
