I've even seen a German documentary called "The Founders of Europe" where vikings are put on the same level as Greeks and Romans in defining European culture as we know it today.
    Wait? What?

No way. There was some influence but not that much. The Germanic that was the most influential were the Franks, the Anglo-Saxon, and the Germans, as well as the Goths/Visigoths.
Vikings were not on par to the Romans. Danes were probably the most influential of the lot.

Gotcha. You raise an interesting point though about the lack of Viking influence in England. Not sure if your familiar with Survive the Jive, the YouTuber and English amateur historian but that dude acts like English people are practically Scandinavian and tries to link the two cultures. There is some connection but I think he exaggerating. Maybe he read too many Norse tales or something.

Overwhelming prevalence in pop culture?! There was just one TV series about them, that's it, that's all. The damage the Vikings did in their rampages across Europe is nothing compared to what the Mongols did across Central Asia and around the Middle-East.

I thought that the Vikings were allies of the old Germans.

I'm sure it's because of the Anglo-Saxon. They were a related people who moved into Britain and took it over after the Romans left. But being related doesn't make them the same.

Genetic studies show that admixture is very low; higher rate of blondes in east England is due to it being the original spot of Germanic kingdoms like Saxons. I am sure their is small amounts of viking but nothing to brag about or take any pride in; and realistically any viking admixture didn't come through voluntarily. Remains of vikings were chased out by the Anglo-Saxons/butchered, they never stayed and assimilated in the same way the Normans did for example. Orkney is most significant at 25%, from Norwegian vikings.

I will likely avoid this survive the jive bloke lol.

Vikings had a day set aside once a week for bathing while Christians on the continent thought bathing was a sin.

Whatever dude, deny it all you want. It won't change the fact that vikings or more broadly Norse culture are mainstays in modern pop culture. Examples abound from video games, television, movies, literature, LARPing and so on.

Nah, dude. You're the one who needs a reality check. Just because Hollywood releases some random superhero movie featuring some random Viking god, you think Vikings are everywhere.
