Default Do welsh feel closer to english than scottish and irish ?

Wales was part of England for long time, i don't think there is strong particularism. They vote for brexit like english, contrary to scottish and northern irish.

I think the Welsh feel closer to the English.

I'm not Welsh myself so cannot speak for them, but from the perspective of someone in England I'd say Wales and England are generally pretty close; Scotland is pretty distant from us and is practically another country politically socially and culturally, where as Wales doesn't feel distant especially for us who live close to the border. Only part of Wales i'd see as extremely foreign is north-west Wales where they actually speak Welsh.

Cardiff is like two seconds from Bristol, and within a few hours of much of Englands population.

Yes, Wales definitely is much more intertwined and comfortable with England than Scotland and Ireland are.

Yes, although Scots who are protestant are also quite close. Scots of Gaelic descent are more nationalistic and have less of a British Identity. Much of the Scottish Lowlands is just northern England 2.0

How would Scots know if they were of Gaelic descent or not? I wouldn't say they think in those terms. I don't think any Scots today wouldn't have some Gaelic ancestry. Anyway I think most people think in modern states i.e. Irish, Scots, English, Welsh. I don't think Welsh go around thinking they are Ancient Britons for example.
