Default Catalonia's ex-president Carles Puigdemont on life 'on the run'

Catalonia's ex-president Carles Puigdemont on life 'on the run'

    26th February, 2019

Carles Puigdemont, the ex-president of the Spanish region of Catalonia, spoke to the BBC's Europe reporter Gavin Lee about life in self-imposed exile in Belgium.

The interview took place as 12 pre-independence politicians face trials in Madrid and some could face up to 25 years in prison, if found guilty.

Mr Puigdemont has been on the run since his then-government led a failed attempt to secede from Spain after a controversial self-determination referendum.

Puigdemont twice ignored the request of the Mossos (regional police) to condemn the referendum

The head of planning of the regional police device admits that they were "aware" of the difficulty of preventing the consultation with only two agents per electoral school

Commissioner Manel Castellví, former chief of Information of the Mossos d'Esquadra, on Monday in the Supreme Court

    Carles Puigdemont

He was dismissed as President of the Generalitat on October 28, 2017,5 under the protection of Order PRA / 1034/2017, of October 27, 6 in application of article 155 of the Spanish Constitution of 1978. From 2017 is in search and capture in Spanish territory accused of alleged crimes of rebellion, sedition and embezzlement of public funds, for acts attributed to him in the organization of the referendum on independence of Catalonia on October 1, 2017 and on the alleged declaration unilateral independence of the territory carried out on the 27th of the same month

On October 28, 2017, pursuant to Article 155 of the Constitution, he was dismissed as president of the Generalitat. A day later, on October 29, he undertook a trip to Brussels, leaving in the trunk of a car at dawn from his home in Gerona and taking a flight from Marseille to the European capital, to avoid the action of the Spanish justice. Since then he is considered a fugitive.

    A small summary:

1-After the Franco dictatorship, Catalonia approves its Statute of Autonomy, which grants it devolved regional powers.

2-In 2005 a new Statute of Autonomy is agreed on between the Spanish and Catalangovernments and approved Catalan parliament.

3-A year latter, there is a heavy new modiffication of the "Estatut", but the Popular Party denounces the Catalan Statute in front of the Constitutional Court of Spain, arguing that it infringes the Spanish Constitution.

4-The Spanish Constitutional Court suspends essential articles of the new Statute of Autonomy affecting the recognition of Catalonia as a nation, protections for the Catalan language, regional tax collection powers, and more...

5-As a response of this sentence, there was a massive protest of over amillion people in the streets of Barcelona calling for the right to self-determination. (This was the beginning..)

6-Since then, and increasingly every September 11th (Catalonia's National Day), Omniun Cultural and The Catalan National Assembly (cultural non-governmental organisations), organize a marchall over Catalonia where millions of people clamor for independence.

7-After years of non understanding with Spanish Gouvernement (reject of a new fiscal system, their negatives to each and every proposals about that, and more, and more...), the Catalan government announces that the independence referendum will take place on October 1st, 2017. Then, the Spanish government sends over 10,000 policemen to Catalonia in order to prevent the referendum from taking place. As part of the operation against the referendum, Spanish police arrest 14 public servants and search the Catalan Economy Ministry HQ, among others. In many polling stations some ballot boxes are violently withdrawn. (The way they try to "prevent" the referendum is in many videos recorded all over Catalonia, where the violence from the Spanish police is obvious and shameful...).
Despite all the difficulties, most of Catalans could vote and said "yes" to independence, and in response to the result of the referendum, the Catalan Parliament declares the independence of Catalonia.

8-After that, the Spanish government suspends Catalonia’s home rule, calls early elections, and removes the democratically-elected Catalan government, whose members are summoned to declare before a judge in Madrid the week after.

9-Catalan president Carles Puigdemont and several Catalan ministers go into exile in Belgium and Scotland.

10-Those members are charged with sedition, rebellion, and misuse of public funds and are in pretrial detention (in jail), where they also remain to this day, which is totally unfair and goes against human rights! Some of them have babies at home waiting for them!

In short: the Catalan problem has no turning back!. Is growing ever wider every day.
We, the true Catalans, feel different, think different, have different wishes and feelings, and want to be independent!

Franco visits Catalonia in a bath of crowds

Visit of Franco to Catalonia. At that time there was hardly any immigration from the rest of Spain, so all those who are there applauding and cheering are the ancestors of those who now want to become independent at least in part. Many changes of opinion according to interests.

Nobody there was bound to be thanking Franco for all the privileges he gave to Catalonia.

    Franco visits TarragonaCatalonia.

I do not like Franco, I stay at my house, the police will not go to millions of homes to force you out to applaud Franco, and if you go, it's because you want to.

Franco inaugurating the industry that put in Catalonia privileges to the detriment of the rest of the regions. So I applaud and shout Viva Franco.

STOP privileges. The mentality of modern Spanish is equality.

Postscript: Think that independence is victimized and uses lies as a systematic method of distortion and manipulation of reality. Search the Spanish press and translate it is the best way to be well informed about the subject in an objective way.

"when you say the true catalans..what do you mean ?
you must dismiss the more than 50% of people in cataluna who dont want independence as not true catalans ?"

    To Mopi:
When I talk about "true Catalans", I mean those who really feel Catalan. In Barcelona there is a lot of Spanish immigration (mainly Andalusians who came here decades ago). They and their descendants (born in Catalonia), don't feel 100% Catalan (although there also Andalusians and even foreign people living here who support independence, but they are a minority).
As an example, Girona is the most independent province of Catalonia. Mainly because immigration there, was less massive and because ther are no large multinationals but a lot of local businessmen for whom the right to decide is a democratic and essential right....
How do you know that more than 50% of the Catalan population don't want independence?...we need a referendum to know that for sure, don't we?...
