German firefighters save rat

This was on the news today in Denmark and sparked a pretty heated debate on Facebook (the incident itself apparently took place some time ago). A fat rat got stuck in a manhole cover in Germany and was freed and released by the local fire department. Many comments pointed out the ridiculousness of wasting taxpayer money to save pests the state spends a fortune on eradicating. Others argued that all animals should be spared as much suffering as possible, most in favor of releasing it in nature and few giving it a swift death.
What are your thoughts?

I guess it happened for the first time or it is extremely rare... so I can't see it as a big deal.
I would save it too if I had that option, so I agree with that.

You can like them, they are still a public health concern.

You cant imagine a big city without pest control, they spread diseases and reproduce like nothing else.

Rats are cute until 1/3 of your populace dies from bubonic plague and you run out of places to bury their bodies, then you get so frustrated and stressed out so you take your anger out and blame it on the Jews and kick them out to Poland
