I don't see what the enlightenment had to do with French speaking Aristocracy but to depose of them since the enlightenment was a bourgeoisie movement. The enlightenment lead to the French Revolution. In the Greek city States, the idea of the equal rights of men did not apply to slaves; the “liberty, equality and fraternity” of the great French Revolution meant the liberty of the rising capitalist class to trade freely, the equality of this class with the feudal lords, and the fraternity of this class with itself – the mutual aid against feudal oppressions and restrictions but did not apply to poorer sections or citizens of France etc..
