It actually does hold water because I am talking about the 19th century here. The Chinese invaded Taiwan in the 17th century btw and got ran out in 1895. The Japanese invaded Korea in 1910 after it had been a Chinese puppet for the last 300 years. French-Vietnamese relations go back to the 17th century but the French finally secured Vietnam in 1887.

Things aren't modern. There is more than European history in the world and perceptions in Asia are as such that the Chinese are a traditional menace. Some countries also have those sentiments towards Japan and there isn't a single country in East Asia where the Chinese enjoy any real popularity.
