Ravenna is indeed beautiful. It has a rich medieval Byzantine heritage.

I've almost been to Ravenna and regret not visiting the city when I was in Bologna (I went back to Milan instead).

It's definitely worth it.

It was Roman city and capital of Western Empire as commanded by Illyrian Diocletian who apparently hated Rome because of many non-Romans who settled there.

Rome, Ravenna and Sicily were the last territories Romans held against the massive Lombard, Frankish and other hordes who captured them in 7th century A.D.
