During the 1980’s, A Nightmare on Elm Street first introduced audiences to the iconic horror character, Freddie Kruger. But as unsettling as the movie was, the true story that inspired director Wes Craven's creation of the supernatural killer is equally disturbing. This week, we examine the terrifying curse of the Dab Tsog.

The Filipinos have a similar myth and similar demon - known as bangungot. There are a lot more creepy myths in that part of the world: the manananggal, aswang and wakwak in the Philippines. The penanggalan is also well known in the surrounding area. SADS is also an officially recognised cause of death in the Philippines. More about sleep paralysis can be found here.

I have learned to take its Filipino colleague very seriously (and I am not superstitious by nature). When my fiancee and I just began dating, we were in a hotel in El Nido and we had laid down for a couple of hours before going to get some dinner. I don't remember falling asleep but I remember a knock on the door and getting up to the door to open thinking she would be outside and that maybe she had already ordered us dinner to be delivered by room service. She was standing in the doorway but I had a strange feeling that it wasn't here. Next thing I'm on the bed, being choked. I remember waking up staring in my fiancee's worried face and she said that she had me screaming in a muffled voice in my sleep and she thought I had a bad nightmare. I explained my dream to her and the first thing she said was "bangungot" and she explained what it was and when I told her that it was her in that dream - she turned white as a sheet because they believe that whoever you see in that dream is next to be taken (so, maybe it's just as well that she was sleeping next to me - maybe there is a kind of mutual protection there). We're in 2019 now, and everything is o.k but she too had her experience but, thankfully, she has her niece sleeping next to her. Filipinos hate to sleep alone and with such.. things around, I don't blame them.
