Looked like a beautiful and highly civilized European capital even then, with the added advantage of ethnic homogeneity.

Madrid is a nice city but Barcellona is better ( bad aspect of Barcellona is the tourist... too many ).
I have been the first time in Barcellona in 1981 ( and then in 1982 and 1988 and 1992 and 1996 and 2000 and 2004 and 2008 and 2012 ) and it was already a nice big city.. .. but with no beach or very small.. So i decided to achieve Valencia area to enjoy the seaside..and to visit internal countryside..
I will go to Barcellona when Sagrada Familia will be "finished"..

In 2016 about 59% of the inhabitants of the city were born in Catalonia and 18.5% coming from the rest of the country. In addition to that, 22.5% of the population was born outside of Spain, a proportion which has more than doubled since 2001 and more than quintupled since 1996 when it was 8.6% respectively 3.9%.[70]
