    Princess of Kapurthala
    maharaní

    Anita Delgado Briones. Málaga.

    Childhood
He was born in Málaga on Calle Peña, the daughter of Ángel Delgado de los Cobos and Candelaria Briones. These ran the small café La Castaña, in which Ana soon revealed her artistic concerns. Together with his sister Victoria, he began to attend declamation classes. Anita's interest in these classes made her father renew her enrollment, despite the bad financial situation. Finally, the situation became untenable and they decided to emigrate to Madrid.

    Youth and wedding

Majarajá Sir Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala, husband of Anita.
In Madrid he continued his studies and -together with his sister, and despite the disappointment of his father- debuted as a support act at the café-concert Central Kursaal (in the Plaza del Carmen). Both sisters formed the duo The Camelian Sisters. Many intellectuals and artists came to this place, among them the painters Julio Romero de Torres and Ricardo Baroja who asked the two sisters to pose for them. Anita, who was then 16 years old, did not accept, which her sister Victoria did, who at that time was in relations with the painter Leandro Oroz.

At that time the wedding of King Alfonso XIII with Princess Victoria Eugenia de Battenberg was going to be celebrated, so in Madrid there were celebrities from all over the world. One of these characters, the Maharaja of Kapurthala, Jagatjit Singh, comes to the show and is captivated by the young woman from Malaga, wanting to meet her.

Anita does not accede to his requests and the Maharaja leaves Madrid due to the attack suffered against the kings of Spain in the Calle Mayor. From France he insists and asks Anita to marry him. At first, she does not accept, but in one of the letters she sends to the prince she tells him that she will marry him. This letter arrives at the hands of Romero de Torres and Valle-Inclán before being sent to France, who, observing the simple language and the numerous spelling mistakes, write a new missive that turns the acceptance of Anita's marriage into a poetic declaration of love to the majarajá. The letter was translated into French by Juan Jesus Inciarte, a Basque student of Mining Engineering and a member of the Baroja and Valle Inclán social gathering. Finally, he traveled to Paris where he married civilly with the Maharaja. Later it travels to India, where it contracts marriage the 28 of January of 1908 at the age of 18 years, by the sij rite. The ceremony of Kapurthala will be remembered for its majesty: the bride came on the back of a luxuriously decorated elephant.

    Period in India
He lived for years in India, where he had a son, Maharaja Kumar Ajit Singh, who taught the Spanish language. In 1914, due to the outbreak of World War I, her husband traveled to Europe to put himself at the service of the British army. Anita accompanied him, making important donations to the French-British hospitals.

His son Ajit (1908-1982) obtained the military rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1925, after 18 years of marriage, she divorced and left India forever.

As of that moment, Ana lives on horseback between Paris, Madrid and Malaga. Finally he settled in Madrid, where he died in 1962 due to a heart attack.

The death of her husband in 1949 affected her deeply.

He wrote a book of his impressions in India entitled Impressions of my trips to the Indies.

His official biographer, Elisa Vázquez de Gey, wrote three books about Anita Delgado, the princess of Kapurthala.

Wikipedia in Spanish is preferable to translate it because it is more complete than the English version, which is very limited.

If you do not have much time, we recommend this walk through the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Almeria. But remember that we love having you here and we want you to repeat another day more calmly.
