Portraits of young people living in the Almeria desert

    -Manuel, 28 years old.

VICE: Hello Manuel, what are you working on?
Manuel: I have come to work as a Tourist Promoter at the town hall. I mainly try to organize cultural activities for children and elderly people.

So you are not from here?
No, I'm from Almería. I arrived in June.

    -Virginia, 25 years old

VICE: Hi Virginia, how do you young people in Tabernas make out on the weekends?
Virginia: Here in Tabernas there is a pub that in summer is quite full. In winter there are very few people and those of us who stay, what we do is get together at a friend's house or in a garage, the typical thing (laughs). I have a group of lifelong friends and we are not much of a binge drinkers, we usually meet for dinner and then we play board games and things like that.

Have you ever lived in a big city and do you miss it?
I lived in Almería because I had to go there to study. And, well, the truth is that I do miss it a bit. In the future I would like to live in Madrid or in a bigger city. Here I sometimes feel a bit isolated. Especially on rainy days in winter.

    -Almudena, 19

VICE: You are the youngest in this article. What do you do?
Almudena: I'm studying. Tomorrow I'm going to Granada to study photography.

    Do you drive?
Yes, I've had my license since I was 18. It was almost the first thing I did after I turned 18.

    -Diego, 29

VICE: Hello Diego, how do you see the future of Tabernas?
I would not like to leave the town because I think that if young people from small towns who want to set up cultural or business initiatives we all go to the capitals, in the end the town will die. I think Tabernas is still holding on because there are many young people who are betting on the town, for example by opening businesses. I am still here giving the theater workshop and as long as I can I will continue doing it. Although I earn more money working at the University of Almeria where I direct the Aula de Teatro.

    -David, 21

VICE: Have you always lived in Senés?
David: No, I haven't. I used to live in Adra, which is a much bigger town. I've been living in Senés for 4 years now. It was a change to move, but I lived in peace. I don't want to live in a bigger city either, I'm fine here, although I do go to Almería a lot.

    -Oxana, 36

    VICE: Where are you from?
    From Russia.

How did you end up in Tahal?
Well, because I married a Spaniard and when they moved him here to live, I came with him. He was working in the office of a bank that was here, although after closing it he now works in Almeria.

    What do you do?
I work in a company of the city council in which we do different things. Today we are working on a construction site, but we also clean streets and do things related to the countryside. I can't tell you much more because it's my first day.

Central European traditions in Andalusia. A cultural legacy of the 18th century in the New Towns of Charles III: survival and transformation.

    ABSTRACT

During the reign of Charles III, one of the most important agrarian reform projects of the Spanish eighteenth century took place: the New Settlements of Sierra Morena and Andalusia. Among its many singularities, the fact that this colonization was mainly carried out with families from Central Europe, with languages (they spoke German, French and, to a lesser extent, Italian) and cultural traits very different from those they found after their arrival in Spain, stands out above all. However, the authorities who welcomed them, from the very beginning, tried to integrate them as soon as possible, adopting the language and customs of the country. A quite successful process after a couple of generations, hence, in our days, after more than two centuries, many of these elements have completely disappeared. Only a few traditions of Central European origin have survived, albeit with variants and modifications slowly incorporated during this long period. We do not consider this fact to detract in any way from the relevance of these unique heritage elements. The objective, therefore, of this work will consist of analyzing three traditions of festive character brought by the first settlers to these localities and that continue being part today of the cultural patrimony of the New Towns of Sierra Morena and Andalusia: the Easter Eggs, the Dance of the Fools and the Dance of the Bear. The first one is still present, every Easter Sunday, in all the municipalities that integrated these new colonies; although with its own and specific features in many of them. On the other hand, the aforementioned dances only remain today in the municipalities of Fuente Palmera and Fuente Carreteros, after having disappeared in La Carlota.

Killer whales continue to cause panic in the province of Cádiz, specifically in Tarifa. Two people from a sailboat needed help from Salvamento Marítimo during the early hours of last Thursday, August 12, when they suffered an interaction with orcas and the breakage of their rudder.

    61 interactions since March
"The sighting of cetaceans was considered one of the biggest attractions in the area," recalls Francisco Colón. Nowadays, these "coincidences" have increased their frequency to become a real risk to the integrity of sailors.
