There are typical Belgian mentality traits, but overal we're an accident in history. Very depressing history, until after 1863 or so, when finally Antwerp could thrive again (well it also could under the United Netherlands). Before that the Scheldt traffic, our economic artery, was perturbed by tolls.

Despite that, it can be made to work, I guess. That's what young people seem to want. It's not a bad country here today.

Actually the ethnonym "Belgians" is very ancient, much older than the ethnonym "Dutch". Already Julius Caesar mentioned the Belgae. If anything I would say that the Dutch are an accident. Or the Germans, depending on how you see it. But it is an accident in history that the Dutch are not just a subgroup of the Germans, or that the Germans are one nation (instead of several different groups - similar to the Dutch case).
