To me the Croatian core is today's southern Croatia (Dalmatia, the hinterland regions and the part of Bosnian Krajina later referred to as 'Turkish Croatia'), basically the chakavian-marked region of this map:

    Dalmatia.

Why are only north and central Dalmatia specified by the way?

To my mind are the "purest" Croatian regions Lika, the Herzegovina and Dalmatia.

Slavonia and Central/Northern Croatia are culturally significantly influenced by Austria and Hungary, Istria by Italy and Bosnia by a admixture of Austria, Ottoman and a bit Serbia. The three at the beginning mentioned regions are relatively untouched, to my impression.

These are original counties of earliest Croatian state

Southern Dalmatia was divided to smaller Slavic principalities like Zachlumia and Pagania which were indipendent like in the beginnings.

North Adriatic (Kvarner) is often forgotten as also early core land of Croats. Some of oldest/most important archeological data for medieval Croatia was found there.
    like this:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ba%C5%A1ka_tablet

More precise name for this region is Croatian littoral:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croatian_Littoral
it was never under foreign rule since Croatia was established in medieval up until 20th century

    earliest core of medieval Croatia

I marked area in between first capitals (Nin, Biograd, Solin, Šibenik, Knin) and legendary coronation place of King Tomislav in Duvno Field.

In my opinion it's both Dalmatia (central, northern) and Kvarner
