It depends on the situation and what I want to achieve.

Generally I am direct but I try to do in a positive manner so that the person doesn't feel attacked. This works very well for me at work when I have to deal with a subordinate. I say what they have been doing wrong, but I always follow it up by saying about what they have been doing right. People react well to that because they still feel like they are valuable part of the team, work harder at doing the right thing and it minimises conflict. I've been told often that I'm nice to work with because even if I have to speak to someone about their wrongs, they don't feel denigrated or criticised.

With hubby I am direct, as he is with me. The unvarnished truth. But if there is something which needs serious looking at and I know he will be opposed, I plant a seed and he thinks he came up with the solution himself. It avoids an argument, he gets to save face and the goal is achieved. Sometimes it takes a little longer that way but it is more permanent because it is 'his' decision.

I choose my battles wisely. It it's not worth the effort, I'll just shut up, ignore and move on. I choose this method on the forum. What is the point of arguing about something endlessly when you know the other person is not going to budge? There is no point to even debating.

My late husband's father summed it up beautifully. Ask yourself: Do you want to make a noise or do you want a result?

If your aim is a result then it doesn't matter how you get there. If you want to make a noise, go waste your time somewhere else.

Generally i am direct and speak the truth, but it depends on the person i'm addressing to. Sometimes i just don't want to hurt the feelings of someone i like or who was friendly to me, then i omit the truth or lie. But it also depends on the subject and situation.

And no, i'm not opportunist, i don't lie to gain things from others.
