As a native-Dutch speaker (which is very close to German):

Not really. It's because our textbooks used to be British, TV and films - were also influenced by Britain.

Squirrel was 100% correct. The "Massachusetts" sounded slightly British. Maybe it's easier because Dutch is like a bridge between German and English (cf. 12th century Anglic).

But there is something the Germans can't pronounce: the good-old fashioned Dutch Sch. Which is a combination of a hard S and a hard G. In 1940 it was actually used as a shibboleth. Unfortunately, there is a group of Dutch (Limburgers) that also have problems with it and would pronounce it the German way..

Na, meine Herren, sag mal Scheveningen !
(The conversation goes something like this:

Soldier 1: "Halt.. what do you want ?!"
Guus: "We're here to enlist as volunteers !"
    Soldiers 1: "Ach, you're nuts ! F...ck off, man !"
Guus: "Come on, let us pass !"
    Soldier 2: "We're boche ! Boche in disguise !"
    Erik: "We're Hollanders !"
Soldier 1: "Put your hands up ! You (point at Guus) too !"
Soldier 3: "You have to make them say Sch, Boche can't prounce Sch".
Guus: "Scheveningen, Scheveningen" (clear standard pronunciation)
Soldier: "Same to you !" (pointing at Erik)
    Erik: "Scheveningen, Scheveningen !"
    Guus: "Schele schoonmoeder ("squinting mother-in-law")
Erik: "Sch, sch, you c*nt !"
Soldier 1: "Alright, let them pass !"

I think we're pretty much the stepping stone. Dutch also have problems pronouncing certain things in standard German and for Germans their accent is quite marked when they speak Dutch.

In Rheinland we use the Dutch "Ch" and "Sch" way.

Instead of sag mal, we say sach mal.
