Then you only seem to go to Latin America (in general). You can fly there via the U.S as well.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Last year I fly to Miami.

    Approximately 9 hours.

    Return, less than that.

It was a long flight, for sure. Next time, i'm gonna book first class, money aint even issue, it's about relaxing myself.

I often have flown via the US to get there (JFK, Atlanta, Miami). But in fact, most of my holidays I spend within Europe.

Then Madrid or Rome can hardly be called gateways to Europe, woudn't you say ?

Nobody goes to Rome for that. You fly directly.
Absolutely. Iberia & Alitalia do not serve destinations as much as Air France-KLM, British Airways or Lufthansa. Even Turkish Airlines especially Istanbul (Ataturk & the new recent airport) are more important hubs.

Madrid is the only European airport to have direct flights to Puerto Rico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Bolivia and Paraguay, either with Air Europa or Iberia. Rome is the main transfer airport for people arriving from outside Europe who wish to fly to Malta, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania or Greece (or vice versa).
Most of these destinations are not huge. They are we call "niches" because they are minor when its comes to passangers/cargo traffic worldwide and Iberia/Alitalia serves them because they have immigrants of these nationalities in their countries. This does not make them more important airlines or hubs. I believe Madrid is not far in the ranking of the most important airports in Europe though but difference between the top airports is significant in numbers.
Also some of the countries you mentioned are SERVED by companies like Air France-KLM (Greece, Serbia are among them). If we only take European airlines, the sector to go inside/outside of Europe is dominated by three ones : British Airways, Air France-KLM, Lufthansa
Inside Europe, Ryanair, Transavia & EasyJet are the leaders
    Biggest airline companies/airports are correlated

Yeah Panama City is popular, lots of people retire there. Costa Rica is becoming more popular. In some of those places there isn't much to do except get lost in a jungle.

OK but as you say the US has lots of immigrants FROM those countries, so surely there are lots of people visiting relatives in both directions?

Yes, but with illegals not sure if they can get a passport. Any that were originally processed and released then skipped court dates will eventually have deportation orders them. There are lots of fake ID manufacturers in the USA but not sure if they can do passports. It isn't always easy for family members to get a travel visa either. Legal Mexican Americans can drive, unless they are headed to Mexico City. Mexico City has to be busiest for Americans, not heading to the vacation spots, in Latin America.

How much air traffic between Mexico City and the US would be due to Mexicans and how much due to Americans, in your opinion?
