If your English is enough to form deep and meaningful relationships with genuine Anglophones, I think the language also belongs to you as an active participant.

The UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA each "own" their own variants. Possibly also South Africa, but I'm not very familiar with the language situation there. Of course, the UK has the truest claim on the language, but they can be a bit snobbish at times. There's no reason why there can't be regional variations. That said, I would have some respect for an English language academy like other languages have, were Britain to establish one.
