If you study business or economics you should learn Standard Chinese.


It's complicated but as an American if you study or want to work as a businessman or as a CEO you will have some chances of having to comunicate with Chinese partners.

If you want Indo-European languages, you shall learn French and German. Dutch is the closest language to English, but in our days it's pretty useless to speak Dutch unless you want to live in the Netherlands, so after Dutch and scandinavian languages aside, French and German are the closest languages. German because it's germanic, and Germany is the wealthiest country of Europe, French had a lot of influence in English Language vocabulary specialy after the Norman invasion, France itself is also after Germany, the biggest economy and the most powerful country of Europe.

Among Romance Languages (putting French aside) I would advise you to learn Portuguese or Spanish. They are more international languages and you are more likely to find a Brazilian or a Hispanic person around the Globe than an Italian. Romanian is useless.

As for Slavic languages, Russian.

Don't you guys learn Spanish down there in school?

It must be only in some American states where Hispanics are more common. Why would an American from Alabama, Dakota or Wiscounsin want to learn Spanish?

Probably it's only on SW states.

Spanish is a good compliment to English, it's very easy to learn, if spoken well and depending on your voice it sounds nice (subjective but w/e), good literature, great music, your neighbouring countries speak it and Latinas are fire, amongst the most widely spoken languages in the world.

If not, then French, it's more prestigious than Spanish and has a richer literature, but there are always translations so this may be moot, it's much harder to learn although it has closer lexical similarity to English than Spanish does and is spoken by a lot less people, mainly in Africa.

You're right. It's in US curriculum basically everywhere to take Spanish class. But half the kids don't give a shit. I was one of that half.

Ideally, I'd like to learn something that I have significant ancestry from so I can be a professional larper, so German is ideal, but Im also extremely interested in Greek right now. Spanish is also interesting to me as I have a few close friends that I could communicate with in person, and they're actually Spanish and not Latin American so I can learn the White mans Spanish.
