Interesting how only West Yorkshire scores German before French.

Make of it what you will.

The graph alone without the numbers was confusing, and people had been erroneously using it as evidence of actual ancestral admixture rather than just likeness to modern continental populations.

What I get from it as that Cornwall is clearly the most Southern/French shifted part of Britain (least Germanic + Bell Beaker), and that West Yorkshire is more Germanic-like than Central and Southern England. Despite this, people always claim with confidence that SE England/East Anglia is the most Germanic part of the country; well if they are then they're obviously mixed with some Southern elements to a much greater degree than people in Yorkshire and the North West. I also think the Viking influence in Yorkshire and Lancashire may be underrated.

Some sillies believed this showed Britons to be genetically closest to North France. Which is obviously not what this means.

Did Bretons form part of the French sample?

Yorkshire gets highest Scandanavian for eng more or less too, Northumbria gets slightly more but less German. All of Scotland's regions have higher levels of Scandanavian than England

I guess high levels of French in North west Scotland is due to greater isolation/preservation of native types (if French is proxy for celts/picts etc).

Wales unsurprisingly gets highest levels of south french/Spanish (North Wales 7.1%) but quite high German at up to 34%

Interesting take with this regional breakdown, thanks for doing it, makes it a lot clearer!

Since you bumped the thread, I'll post the original numbers I got from another forum:
    Spoiler!

The high French that Insular Celts get is obviously mostly a proxy for Bretons, so correlates with native pre-Germanic ancestry. Part of the Scandinavian total in my OP includes DEN18, which probably represents some Anglo-Saxon ancestry, so 'Scandinavian' is a bit high in most places and partly Anglo-Saxon. Belgian might be seen as mostly Celtic ancestry, German as mostly Germanic. Who knows what the Spanish/South French represents, maybe even some indigenous Neolithic remnant. 23andme showed some similar small SW Euro/Neolithic affinity for Wales.
