Why are South East Asians lighter than Indians at the same latitude?

They are MUCH lighter. Is it because SE Asians were "lightened" by Mongoloids who came from Siberia? I think original SE Asians were similar to South Indians and Australian Aborigines.

They're not MUCH lighter. only one or two shades lighter. On the map, southern viets, cambodians, malays, eastern thais, etc have same skin tone as north-central and western indians. Northwest Indians are light as indonesians, filipinos, tibetans, and most thais. Central and southern areas are darker than southeast asia, yes.

Pretty much original AASI people were black in skin tone since they didn't need to change much in terms of skin tone when they took the route from africa to the subcontinent given similar climate as Africa. And the Iran neolithic mixture did make them lighter to an extent, hence they are brown or black depending on area, caste, sexual preferences, etc. Steppe mixture made a decent number of folks even lighter in upper castes and northern indians so they can be light brown, olive and occasionally pale as well. mountainous environment and slight tibetan mixture might have helped too.

True most se asians probably had similar skin tone as southern indians. negritos are a good example. Most of the southeast asians today originated from southern china and taiwan, who pretty much were of lighter color than all subcontinental people, except for kashmiris, and they did mix slightly with the natives of the region, but not to the same extent as indians. Many natives were wiped out actually by the northern mongoloids.

Negritoes and heavily Negrito-admixed pre-IE natives of India had an advanced civilization and thus high population density when the IE people invaded there. So their population was MUCH larger compared to Negritoes of SEA.

In SEA, the local Negritoes were all primitive hunter gatherers with a much lower population density who were assimilated rather quick when the Mongoloids overwhelmed the place. Now Negritoes in SEA only live as tribals in a few forests.

This map is not correct because
1. North Italians are darker than Northern Finns and Northern Siberians
2. French are darker than Northern Finns and Northern Siberians
3. North Asians are significantly lighter than East Asians

Australoid influence is higher on Indians. Indians vary from Caucasoid to hybrids of Caucasoid-Austro-Mongoloid, but most Indians have actual Negrito blood in their veins. Given that most Indians are intermediary or low caste they look darker than SE Asians.

Upper Caste Indians aren't much darker than SE Asians and in some cases they are even lighter (or much lighter in some regions like Kashmir or Punjab).

A Southeast Asian from the Philippines chiming in...

Yeah it's weird how some Southeast Asians are exposed to more Ultraviolet Radiation than South Asians but they're lighter. Indonesia for example straddles the Equator but they're lighter than South Asians, some of whom receive cold snowy air coming from Himalayan Mountain Range.

I think it's due to the Malay and Chinese admixture that swamped up the aboriginal Negritos who were only a small minority whereas the Indo-Europeans who migrated to South Asia had to contend with a large Veddoid population.
