On the lands of Bulgaria lived one great and rigorous khan. His name was Krum and he ruled from 802 till 814. He gained fame because of the numerous wins. He was wise – he learned not only from his precursors, but also from the ones he defeated. From his prisoners he learned that their empire fell down because of thefts, lies and intemperance. Then he released the first written laws. They were very strict, with very severe punishments – death for the liars, breaking the legs of the ones who steal and to uproot vineyards so nobody in the country could drink. He retained order.

Since we were only one able to defeat you in battle, I wouldn't call it so.

The climax of the war was the Battle of the Bosnian Highlands that same year,[4] when Croatian forces under the command of King Tomislav completely defeated the Bulgarian forces under the command of Alogobotur, killing most of the Bulgarians in the battle. The Croatian victory was so decisive and the battle so big that contemporary sources greatly overestimated Croatia's Army at 160,000 men, with a slightly bigger force on the Bulgarian side.[5] This was the only battle Tsar Simeon ever lost.
