What’s it like to have 19 children?

Big families are not unusual in the Ukrainian village of Glynne.

While the country’s population is falling, this highly religious community
has more than 100 families with seven or more children.

But one couple has gone further than most, recently welcoming their 19th child.

Can they even remember all of those names?

I remember an English child in my school in Dorset, SW England who had 9 brothers and sisters, and I had a friend from Manchester, NW England, who had 11 brothers and sisters... and I have an Irish friend in Wale from Co. Kerry, Tralee, who has 13 brothers and sisters.... but 19?! I don't know anyone with 19 children. That's got to be a record!

19 is abnormal at all points in history, expect perhaps in the case of a man with multiple wives. Usually the woman's stuff stops functioning at that point. After all 19 children means around 14 years of gestation and women usually encounter menopause around the age of 50. If not menopause, at some number it probably becomes detrimental to the mothers health. 10 or so was not that uncommon though back in the day.

My maternal grandmother was the only female kid of 13 children. Only two of them died in the childhood, but six died as soldiers during the WWII. There's nothing better in the village than incoming future workers who will help the whole family and themsleves to maintain each other. In the city it may be useless, especially when mother is working some office job, leaving the children for the state.
