Spain's reaction was swift and unequivocal.

"The government of Spain deeply regrets that the letter the Mexican president sent to his majesty the king, whose contents we firmly reject, has been made public," it said in a statement.

"The arrival, 500 years ago, of Spaniards to present Mexican territory cannot be judged in the light of contemporary considerations," it said.

It's not even comparable with the saga of founding a new country and a new culture in a hostile land and crossing the ocean before technology made it a piece of cake. It was the pre-modern equivalent of travelling to space and colonizing other planets.

And these things have happened all over history in every continent; to ask anyone to apologise for something that happened 100s of years in which no one living today had any control over is insane. I just find it ironic these Mexicans have the colonisers dna in them, and they're asking the Spaniards who stayed at home to apologise.
