Default Is this a Jewish surname?

Has anyone heard of the surname Semon?

Ancestry.com says its possible origins are "English, Dutch, and French (Swiss)". However, it also lists the places of origin and Germany leads with 57 immigrants, compared to England at 17, and Switzerland at 9.

Does that, a non-German surname with mostly German emigrations, point to it being Jewish? Distribution maps for the surname in Germany show it to be almost nonexistent today. Also, a famous Jew from Germany (biologist Richard Semon) bears this surname.

    Any insight?

It could be Arabic. I knew a Syrian with a similar name.

    Then it's settled: Germano-Judeo-Arabic.
