The Founding Fathers were mostly deists which is the closest you could get to atheism back in those days, but the US got subsumed by commoners starting with the Pennsylvania whiskey rebellion. So, the superstratum is non-religious, the substratum is religious, but religiosity has declined significantly since the early '60s.

I'm not an expert, but I think it varies according to regions there. The South, Midwest. But, things like California and New York don't have christian based societies on nowadays.
