Who do you consider to be german?

But what if someone considers himself a german. Trump said he is a proud German-American? Not everyone thinks the same. I know a guy who said he is american and mixed gypsy and jewish. He thinks he is a gypsy but his brother thinks he is jewish. What about that?

This is called Volksdeutsche. In pre-modern times, most people defined themselves by their ethnicity not geographical boundaries. Thus, the Siebenburgers of Romania were historically considered Germans, not Romanians. Personally, I think a knowledge of German should be an indispensable requirement (but not the only one, obviously) to identify as a German. In this way, Trump is not a German.

Any German speaking person with 4 German speaking grandparents. These are the standards to qualify as most ethnicities.

That's why New World people with thousands of European ancestries don't qualify as any of these ethnicities.

How does this make him more Scottish? His father was fully German. Hes 50:50 but paternal line always matter more
