You mean Volga germans? Eastern german colonists were a part of Ostsiedlung, not just in Russia but in Ukraine, Baltic region, Romania, Serbia, Hungary, Poland.

The way I see it, your ethnic identity (i.e. German, Chinese or whatever) is defined by your ancestry and nothing else. They may be some other views on this, which may include some cultural aspects, but this is not the way I see it. So a German is anyone of German ancestry, regardless of the culture, he was raised in.

I agree generally but there is a exception if it is a realated ethnicity and you would from look fit in and it is a related ethnicity (ie, european, germanic or caucasian white etc.) and you change your name and assimilate to the culture.
