They don't stink like in sweaty or dirty or full of cow dung. They can be 100% clean and showered and they still smell like that.
Our ex-neighbour had two girls. The one was 3 and the other was 9. Very cute kids. Well-behaved, polite, never dirty or unkempt. The 9 year old girl wanted to go to the shop with me one day to buy sweets or something. After we came back the car smelled like 'child'.
It's very strange because both my mother and grandmother talked about this "child" smell. They have/had it too! When we sold our house, my mom, granny and me went to check out a few houses to buy. When we walked into this one house, I immediately backed out because of the smell. My grandmother whispered, "I'm not buying this house. It smells like children!" My mom also pulled a face. It was a lovely house but none of us could get past the smell.
I told my husband about this smell and he thought I was nuts. He went out one afternoon with a friend of his, and his was Father's Day or something and the place was full of kids. When he came home he said, "You are right!! I smelled it today too!" He is a high school teacher and he said none of his students smell because they're about 13-14, which is when the smell fades.
