It's true, France is a transition zone, areas like Britanny are definitely a lot closer to other NW populations than to Iberians, at the same time almost more than the half of France geographically is genetically closer to Iberians (Western and Southern France) so it's a pretty different country.
Eastern France is closer to South and West Germans than to Iberians as well.
France is not as diverse as Italy but it's an area at the crossroads between SW and NW Europe.
