I’ve began learning Welsh recently. Before you lambast me with how stupid of an idea it is because of its centralization in such a small country and lack of use in parts of that country in certain areas, let me explain.. I want YOU to tell me if you think my reasoning is good enough..
Not only do I think it’s one of the most beautiful languages I’ve ever heard, but some of my ancestors were from Wales and spoke it before moving across the Atlantic. I’m not learning it for just those ancestors though. I have a ton of ancestry from Scotland, actually way more than Wales. If it were for just the location of ancestors before the US move, I’d learn Scottish Gaelic. The primary reason I want to learn Welsh is because It’s an extremely close evolved form of the language that mainland Britons spoke before the Anglo Saxon arrival, and the majority of my lineage is from Britain. I already know English so the Anglo Saxon side is covered. Extremely proud of it, but I wish to tackle the other side. Roughly 35% of my DNA is listed as some form of “Celtic”, and i feel I’m doing a disservice to such a beautiful language and my ancestors for not learning.
Do you think that even though I don’t have many ancestors from Wales specifically, my reason is valid?
