Default Young Spaniards flock to Germany to escape economic misery back home

Well, this article is more than 5 years old, but condition is not much better now: the youth jobless rates was at 50% then, now is 35%.

When Dacil Granados turned up in Berlin a year ago and walked into her first German class, she was amazed to find almost all her classmates were fellow Spaniards. "They were all engineers, apart from an architect and myself," says the art historian. "All here, most rather reluctantly, for the same reason – to work."....

Yes, there are millions of retired Northern Europeans, mainly Germans and British, who buy a house in southern Europe and spend their time to sunbathing. Meanwhile, the young Southern Europeans flock to Northern Europe to work. C'est la vie.

Although it is indeed true that more Brits live overseas than do Spaniards, the difference is the range of countries they move to in significant numbers is a lot more diverse - France, Portugal, Spain, Greece, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Gulf Arab countries, Thailand and Singapore all have substantial numbers of British residents. By contrast, most Spaniards who migrate go to Northern Europe, the US, some Latin American countries and not that much anywhere else. (This is one reason why Barcelona and Madrid Airports have considerably fewer flights to Asia and the Middle East than do most Northern European countries and even Italy and Greece).
