    Dear Avô,

You have always been, and will always be that face that makes me smile. When I look at you, I see me, and it’s in our genetics. You are the reason I’m trying my best to learn Portuguese, as I want to have fun conversations with you and avó. Cancer is just one obstacle in your long, and journey-full life, your life can be multiple books. My Portuguese heritage that originated probably generations upon generations ago from the Romans, Celtics, Visigoths, Carthaginians, and natives, makeup your distant ancestors all the way to you, then to my dad and to me. This is a beacon of light we share. When I think of the question, what is life? I think of the most astounding fact that, in the grand-scheme of things we are just dust particles floating in an infinitely expanding cosmos. This is true, we are so small on this planet thats orbit is one of quadrillion’s, but I don’t get sad at this fact. No, not at all. When I look up to the sky, I stand tall because I know my atoms are remnants of the stars that formed billions of years ago. I think of this everyday, that when I look up at the night sky and I know that yes, we are part of this universe, we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts is that the Universe is in us. Grandpa, when I see you, I think of this. When I reflect on that fact, I look up – many people feel small because they’re small and the Universe is big – but I feel big with you, because my atoms came from those stars. There’s a level of connectivity. That’s really what you want in life, you want to feel connected, you want to feel relevant you want to feel like you’re a participant in the goings on of activities and events around you. That’s precisely what we are, just by being alive.

    Love you for eternity,

    ---
aw <3 hope you're doing well

Thank you! This was a year ago now so I've gotten over it. But I put my entire heart into that as my dad had to deliver it in the hospital in Portugal and I was stuck at home in NY.

    Original and Cajun translation combined:

Ah Love! ("Doll") could you and I with Him conspire
To grasp ("know") this sorry Scheme of Things entire, ("of this World")
Would we not shatter it to bits --- and then
Re-mould it ("remake it") nearer to the Heart's Desire!

Bored tonight, but thanks anyway, Omar.

I'd like to turn this poem i wrote into an illustrated children's story.

    T'was a cool damp night
in a forest full of mist
    where moss and lichen

    drip, drip, drip

    There along a stony path
    tread not only the squirming,
    crawling creatures of the night,
    but a lonesome merle fox
    guided by the drifting scent
    of yesterday's decaying lunch
    buried alongside a crumbling stump

As moonlight sifts through creaking stands of cedar, fir, and alder
on which a grandfather owl rests between meals
the night is quiet, but ever so busy
You see, when we are warm in bed with bellies well fed
the creatures of the night feast by moonlight

    Down a steep hillside,
a narrow trail through tattered ferns,
    the merle fox followed
    to the crumbling stump
    emerging from a mossy knoll
    Gently poking with his nose
he found where his meal lay hidden

One look over his shoulder and he started frantically digging
Not one, not two, but three silvery tails emerge from the earth
Ever so gently the fox did gather the three beady eyed furries
    and left in a scurry

Not far from the stump was his quaint hole in the ground
dry as a bone, cozy and round
    He layed out his meal
    All three in a row
Licked his lips and crunched up their bones

    What a wonderful sight
    a midnight delight
    And as the night fades
    the morning grows brighter
    There lay a merle fox
warm in his bed with a belly well fed
