    While I agree that Sharon's past was at least equally tainted as Netanyahu's (if not more so), the difference is that he, albeit rather belatedly, came to realise that Israel couldn't carry on as it was if it wants real long-term peace and security. I actually believe he may well have been murdered and the coma was just a charade - he was about to announce an end to settlements in the West Bank and no doubt many Israelis (including Netanyahu himself) would have opposed this with a violent position.

    Ultimately, I am somewhat skeptical given other events that had happened (2006 War in Lebanon is the big one) that things would have been very different had Sharon survived and stayed in power.
