So, one day I was observing the diner I frequent, and I looked up how much a diner waitress makes ($19,900) and how much a line cook makes ($26,000). Is this how they come up with the 'Women make 70% of what men make' statistic? If so, maybe a diner waitress should become a line-cook if they want more $?

Don't forget that you don't just get hired as a cook. I have a cousin who is training to be a chef and it takes a ton of hard work and years of study (and all sorts of certificates regarding health and safety). That means having to invest in yourself. Every Dick and Harry can become a waiter.
