Well in Virginia and the rest of The South today you have areas where there are Southern areas and then you have areas that are mostly occupied by Yankee transplants . In South Carolina the southern suburbs of Charlotte(Fort Mill,Indian Land, etc), the Columbia area, and the coastal areas are dominated by Yankees and maybe Greenville (but not too familiar with that area), but the rest of the state is pretty Southern still to this day.

Yankees will always be around and it's just something we have to live with. Any urban area especially in the South- however even with the infestation, there still seems to be a reasonable difference between the urban South and the urban north in terms of the pace of life, hospitality and general "vibe". Charleston will never be like Boston, no matter how many eggheads come down.
